\nTen kilometres from the centre of Burgos is this monastery inhabited by Cistercian monks of strict observance, also known as Trappist monks.
\nThe foundation of the monastery dates back to the Visigothic period and later, from the 11th to the 19th century, it was inhabited by Benedictine monks. The prosperity of the monastery in medieval times is reflected in the high quality of its scriptorium.
\nIn addition, the building has undergone several restorations, so that various styles coexist in it. Highlights include the Romanesque-style Cidian Tower, the Cloister of the Martyrs dating from the 12th century, the 13th-century Chapter House and the church rebuilt in the 15th century.

\nAccording to tradition, before going into exile, Rodrigo D\u00edaz de Vivar left his wife Do\u00f1a Jimena and their daughters in San Pedro de Carde\u00f1a, under the protection of Abbot Sisebuto.
\nIn addition, in the Chapel of Saint Sisebuto you can see the tombs of the Cid and his wife Jimena, whose remains have rested in Burgos Cathedral since 1921, after having been moved several times.
