This religious order lives in community, but each monk leads a retired and solitary life of prayer and work consecrated to God.<\/p>\n
The monastery was founded in 1442 by John II, King of Castile and Le\u00f3n and father of Isabella the Catholic.
\nThe single-nave church is the work of Juan and Sim\u00f3n de Colonia, an outstanding family of architects and sculptors from the 15th-16th centuries.
\nAlso, noteworthy inside is the altarpiece of the main altar, a masterpiece made by Gil de Silo\u00e9.<\/p>\n
The tombs of John II, his wife Isabella of Portugal and their son, the prince Alfonso, are also made by Gil de Silo\u00e9.
\nIn the three chapels attached to the church is the Museum where important pictorial, sculptural and bibliographical works are exhibited. Among other works, the painting of the Annunciation by the painter Pedro Berruguete stands out.<\/p>\n
The sculpture of Saint Bruno, founder of the Order, which is in a chapel at the entrance, is admirable. It is the work of Manuel Pereira, a 17th century Portuguese artist. The sculpture, made of polychrome wood, is charged with great realism.
